Corey Hawkins first gained widespread recognition for his breakout performance as hip-hop legend Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton, directed by F. Gary Gray. He recently appeared as Harpo in Warner Bros. The Color Purple, directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones, and Oprah Winfrey. He also starred as Benny in Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In The Heights.
Additional film credits include Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson, Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, The Man in My Basement, Kong: Skull Island, Iron Man 3, Non-Stop, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. His performance as Macduff in The Tragedy of Macbeth earned him the AAFCA Award for Best Supporting Actor. An Emmy Award nominee, Hawkins starred in FOX’s 24: Legacy and The Walking Dead.
On stage, Hawkins most recently starred as Lincoln opposite Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the Broadway revival of Topdog/Underdog for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play. The play also won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Other Broadway credits include Romeo & Juliet, and another Tony Nominated performance in Six Degrees of Separation alongside Allison Janney and John Benjamin Hickey. He is graduate of Juilliard School, and a recipient of the prestigious John Houseman Prize.
Hawkins will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of The Odyssey.
