Angel Powell (they/she/he) is a Jamaican-American born and raised in Jamaica, Queens, NY. Angel started their dance training at Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation under the tutelage of Brittany Stewart. They then attended LaGuardia Arts High School where they started training in Ballet, Graham, Horton, and Limón. During high school, Angel also trained at MOVE|NYC| Young Professionals Program under the direction of mentors Chanel DaSilva and Nigel Campbell as well as the French Academie of Ballet. In 2021, Angel was named a YoungArts Finalist in Modern/Contemporary.
Angel then matriculated to USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. There, they have had the privilege of being guided by Nina Flagg, Shannon Grayson, and d. Sabela Grimes. They have participated in winter/summer intensives such as A.I.M.’s 2021 Winter Intensive, Movement Invention Project 2, and the Contemporary Performance Ensemble at The School at Jacob’s Pillow. Throughout their collegiate and summer experiences, Angel has been able to engage with works from Sidra Bell, Rena Butler, Peter Chu, Jiří Kylián, Studio Wayne McGregor, Toyin Sogunro, and Micaela G. Taylor. Angel recently graduated from USC Kaufman with a concentration in Choreography for Stage and Screen. Centering joy and peace, Angel hopes to use dance as a medium for free expression and a tool for honest connections.
